Tal, Kali Jo. "Bearing Witness: The Literature of Trauma," Yale University, 1991. Advisor: Robert Stepto (2, 12, 22)
Survivor-authors have a special psychological investment in creating narratives of their traumatic experience. This dissertation defines a “literature of trauma,” examining the writings produced by trauma survivors and exploring the relations between communities of survivors and the larger society. Three survivor communities are discussed: Holocaust survivors, combat veterans, and sexual abuse survivors. Survivor narratives (autobiographies, vowels, poetry, essays) are examined within a radical feminist theoretical framework. The interdisciplinary nature of this project required incorporation of methodologies developed within the following disciplines: Afro-American Studies, anthropology, literary criticism, history, Holocaust Studies, psychology, psychiatry, sociology.
