Loeffler, Jane Canter. "Architecture of Diplomacy: The United States Builds Embassies Abroad, 1926-1964," American Studies Program, George Washington University, January 1996.

American embassies were hailed as goodwill emissaries in years past, although now often targets of protest. Illustrating nearly one hundred embassy projects worldwide, this dissertation traces the history of the State Department’s foreign building program, with emphasis on early postwar years when the United States asserted superpower status through construction of an array of diplomatic missions designed by prominent American modernists. Drawing upon congressional hearings and previously unpublished minutes, papers, and interviews, this work assesses the sometimes strained relationship between designer ego and diplomatic expression and further examines the interaction of architecture and politics within the context of a key policy initiative.
