Richie, Margaret Bye. "Architectural Patterns in an Early River Town," University of Pennsylvania, August 1987. Advisor: Anthony N.B. Garvan (13, 23, 2)
The dissertation pertains to eighteenth century New Hope, Pennsylvania, a town on the Delaware River. The town benefitted since early settlement days as focus for transportation and milling; two waterways, and two roads, (one connecting New York with Philadelphia) fostered growth, shipping and industry. This paper links the success of New Hope to its advantageous location, as a result exhibiting fine eighteenth century houses. They serve as evidence of Mid-Atlantic Region architecture analyzed in the first half of the manuscript. The buildings include three mansions and nineteen other houses catalogued (with 95 photos) in the second half of the paper.
