The household is one of the basic units of human domestic activity, and the study of change and adaptation are best studied at he household level. this dissertation uses archaeological data, including artifacts, architecture and fence lines, to examine changes in the organization and use of household space in the colonial Chesapeake. Bariation in space linked to time, function, and economic status are demonstrated to exist within the van Sweringen household (c.1675 - c.1745). This evidence suggests ceremony recently introduced into England, were present in Anglo-America by the late 17th century.
