Vaughn, Edward Jeffrey. "America's Pop Collector: Robert C. Scull-Contemporary Art At Auction," University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, May 1990.
On 18 October 1973, Robert Scull, a private New York art collector who, in the 1960s, built one of the major contemporary art collections in the United States, auctioned fifty works at Sotheby Parke Bernet for $2,242,900. The unprecedented prices these art works brought-amounts usually reserved for old masters-raised to the fore serious questions about the relationship among art, business, and the market. America’s Pop Collector is the title of a non-fiction film that chronicled this watershed event. From the start, the intention was literally to record history-in-the making with a camera. Theories, methodologies, collaborative working relationships, and film distribution were explored and testes through the making of the film document. This thesis chronicles that experience and evaluates the theories that were developed and tested. The background, origination, execution, marketing, and distribution of America’s Pop Collector also are examined.
