Reumann, Miriam Grace. "American Sexual Character in the Age of Kinsey, 1946-64," Department of American Civilization, Brown University, May 1998.
“American Sexual Character in the Age of Kinsey, 1946-64” examines post-World War II American debates about sexuality and national identity, focusing on responses to the Kinsey Reports of 1948 and 1953. It argues that during the postwar years, many Americans—including social and behavioral scientists, politicians, journalists, and social reformers—identified American sexuality as a topic of national importance, debated its political and moral meanings, and drew on recent information about American sexual behavior as an explanatory category in their analyses of social change. The dissertation offers case studies of postwar discussions of marriage, changing gender roles, homosexuality, and American identity.
