Ferguson, Thomas J. "American Perceptions of the Vietnam War in Popular Literature: An Interpretation by a Professional Soldier," University of Hawaii, Manoa, May 1988. Advisor: Floyd W. Matson (12, 11, 23)

Vietnam, America’s longest and most controversial war, was fought in a fragmentary fashion in both time and place. Although the experience of war can never be fully communicated through oral or written means, hundreds of young Vietnam Conflict soldiers-turned-novelists, have come close to providing a sense of realism in modern war. To aid in understanding the conflict, this dissertation juxtaposes the actual history of the Vietnam Conflict against the popular literature in a chronological time frame. The fusion of factual history with the Vietnam novels reflects the legacy of the involvement on American political institutions and culture.
