Resources: Abstracts of American Studies Dissertations

By University | By Year

Herbert, Frank John. "American Nervousness," University of Iowa, December 1990. Advisor: Richard P. Horwitz (15, 2, 18)

This dissertation documents a performance realized by the author in collaboration with the Drawing Legion, an Iowa-based experimental arts company. Inspired by George Beard’s 1881 treatise on neurasthenia, the performance juxtaposes Beard’s theories with the biographies of three midwestern artists: Michigan cartoonist/animator Winsor McCay (1867-1934);Iowa vaudevillian Effie Cherry (1867-1944); and Missouri painter Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975). The dissertation includes an introduction, which considers performance theory and practice in relation to historical research and cultural criticism; a performance transcript, illustrated with photos, set drawings, and visual source material; and critical reviews, which document both the development of the performance, and audience response in the U.S. and Europe.
