Bealle, John. "American Folklore Revival: A Study of an Old-Time Music and Dance Community," Indiana University, December 1988.

Consciously practiced folklore—sometimes called “revived” folklore—-is being increasingly recognized by scholars as a prominent feature of cultural identity in pluralist settings. This study draws upon participant-observation in a Midwestern community in which the folklore of a cultural other is engaged for the enhanced experience that it provides. United by its interest in old-time music and dance, the community brings concepts such as tradition and authenticity to bear upon the folklore of a number of groups, crafting a cultural identity that balances inherited and adopted elements. A review of scholarly literature on folklore revival is included. (AS, F, PC)
