Greenman, Nancy P. "American Education: Emerging Contexts for a Model of the Future," University of New Mexico, December 1987. Advisor: Gladys Levis-Pilz/Anne Taylor (6, 2, 3)
American Education, as a social institution, embodies the perception of reality prevalent in Western society, and transmits the knowledge inherent in that construction of reality via the schools. The current focus on educational reform does not acknowledge this fundamental level in attempts to change American education. This study addresses this fundamental issue in education, examines the socio-cultural, philosophical, and human contexts integral to education and educational reform, reviews some existing models of education in the context of the kinds of change they embody, and proposes a model for education/learning in its philosophical context.
