Kiefer, Geraldine Wojno. "Alfred Stieglitz and Science, 1880-1910," Case Western Reserve University, January 1990.
This dissertation is concerned with the art and editorial activities of Alfred Stieglitz. Since Stieglitz’s formative years straddled a period of intense discovery and theoretical formation in the sciences, since he was a chemistry student in Germany, and since he designed his own venture, the Photo-Secession, along German laboratory lines, it is appropriate to seek scientific analogies for his thought. Aspects of his biography, his writings, the writings of his associates, his editorial policies, and his photographic oeuvre-considered in a biographical, contextual, and critical approach-demonstrate that these analogies are sound.
