Fritze, Tamara. "A View if Her Own: A Cultural Study of the Dooryards of Rural Western Women," American Studies, Washington State University, July 1997.
Using an interdisciplinary approach, this dissertation examines living and literary gardens to discover one aspect of women’s interaction with the western land. As an assertion of power over the land, dooryard gardens expose the gardener’s on-going dialectic with nature, and with the cultural hegemony. By examining women’s perception or non-perception of the nature-culture binary, this dissertation defines a taxonomy of Western dooryards of rural women. Examining these gardens as folkart helps to demonstrate the diverse roles they serve, including biological, economic, social, aesthetic, psychological, and spiritual roles. This dissertation reveals how gardens perform this complex work.
