Fox, Evarts C., Jr. "A Study of Historic Preservation in Hawaii," University of Hawaii, Manoa, August 1985. Advisor: James M. McCutcheon (13, 11, 5)

Five case studies are used to point out how Hawaii’s historic preservation movement has become involved in a wide range of contemporary community problems. Each study presents a different conceptual approach to the historic preservation process. These approaches range from romance and nostalgia to social activism and marketplace economics. The case studies show a shift away from projects based primarily upon nostalgic, educational and social concerns toward a preference for those which show a promise of economic gain. Therefore, the dissertation argues, based upon the preservation of its build environment Hawaii may have only a narrowly selected interpretation of its past.
