Mieras, Emily. "A ‘More Perfect Sympathy’: College Students and Social Service 1889-1914," American Studies Program, College of William and Mary, June 1998.
This dissertation argues that college students’ contributions to progressive-Era social reform projects helped define a new brand of youth culture and contributed to the reconstitution of the American middle class. These predominantly white, middle-class Protestant college students both challenged and reaffirmed traditional conceptions of female and male identity when they performed social service. As they sought to reform immigrant and working-class “others,” they also re-formed their own sense of class identity and transformed privileged college experiences into public service. The dissertation uses in-depth analysis of settlement houses connected to the YMCA, to the woman-run College Settlements Association, and to Northwestern University to demonstrate the origins of contemporary student community service in the Progressive Era.
