Qi, Xiaoxin. "A Matter of Cultural Discourse: Religion, Nation, Gender," American Studies Program, University of Minnesota, June 1997.
From 1890 to 1950 more than two hundred women from the Midwest went to the rural Henan province in China as missionaries. This study is informed by both studies on US-China relations and cultural/gender studies theories. Using oral histories, archival sources, gazetteers, literary and historical representations, this study examines how these evangelical women engaged in diversified intercultural discourse about gender identity and women’s places in family and society. It argues that the intercultural discourse was not in isolation from, but in the context of the Chinese local history, and modern, international politics interplayed with gender and cultural exchanges between the women missionaries and the Chinese.
