Bouricius, Clara Maria. "'A Happier Ending than is Warranted by the Facts'; Or, How E.D.E.N. Southworth Created Sentimental Capitalism, 1849-1886," History of American Civilization Program, Harvard University, May 1997.
Sentimental discourse is posited to be the public “site” producing a truce between democratic ideals and the American capitalist economic system, its platform the mass media. This “case study” contextualized E.D.E.N. Southworth’s rhetorical manipulations in the marketplace for serial fiction. It reads her 1850’s statements as identity management; the 1853 abolitionist India in the context of her bid for a middle-class audience; her conflict with Henry Peterson of the Saturday Evening Post as resulting from nationalizing trends in publishing. Finally, Southworth’s relationship with Robert Bonner and his New York Ledger focuses the argument on her translation of dispossession into a discourse of civic “rights” in Self-Made (1863).
