The dissertation was an inquiry into political expression in African American and Nigerian art. The approach employed was comparative and interpretative in that in the examination of Nigerian and African American cultures, and the works of African American and Nigerian artists, the underlying artistic political expressions and identities were analyzed and juxtaposed. The creative expressions of Nigerian artists in the 1960s and the 1970s were compared and contrasted with those of African American artists produced in the same period. The paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture pieces were employed to gain insight and to examine the experiences of peoples of African descent in America and Nigeria during their period of self-assertion and were, therefore, examined in cultural, historical, and political contexts. The conclusion was reached that the works of art produced during the 1960s and 1970s were expressions of African American and Nigerian cultures that reflected and embodied the political developments taking place during the period.
