The Committee on American Studies Programs was not as active as it might have been in 2002. Building on the work of previous committees, we were happy to see that the program directors listserv continues to function well, although it has yet to catch fire fully as a furnace for stoking collaborative work in program development.

Our committee is continuing to work on re-establishing the Focus on Programs Day series at the national ASA meeting as was organized by the committee in prior years. In doing so, the committee is adhering to the standard rules of the convention (prohibition against duplicate appearances, etc.).

Our committee's charge has been, in the past, to organize panels or workshops in the ASA convention that will benefit program directors in their administrative leadership as well as address larger issues having to do with program structures, curriculum, etc.

The Committee on American Studies Programs met in Detroit at the annual ASA convention. The Chair of the Committee also met with representatives of the Students' Committee and then President-Elect George S�nchez. The student representatives raised several issues regarding the relative paucity of attention paid to program issues at the convention.

The Committee on American Studies Programs met at the Kansas City conference, under the leadership of Chair Erika Doss (University of Colorado). Attending the meeting were Committee members June Howard (University of Michigan), Deborah Dash Moore (Vassar), Vera Norwood (University of New Mexico), and H. Daniel Peck (Vassar). Discussion centered on planning sponsored sessions for the 1997 Annual Meeting and on program-level needs for various sorts of data (retention, graduation, placement rates of students, faculty work loads, salaries, etc.) to use during program reviews.
