The Committee on American Studies Programs met at the Washington, D.C. convention. They discussed plans for the several sessions at the 1998 annual meeting in Seattle. On is a pre-convention workshop for American Studies program directors on the American Studies graduate degree, which will focus on the results of the ASA National Office-National Research Council studies, as well as on discussion of professional training, placements, and the job market. In addition, the Committee planned a pre-convention workshop for American Studies program directors on American Studies pedagogy. Finally, the Committee planned a session entitled “The Business of American Studies.“
Among the issues the Committee will focus on in 1998-99 is an evaluation of the relevance of the American Studies Crossroads project to American Studies programs. Among the issues they will focus upon is the importance of updating the on-line program directories; providing students interested in going to graduate school in American Studies with more information, formal and informal, on programs and the experiences of current students in them; the possibility of a session at the 1999 convention on the relationship between programs and the Crossroads project; and the need for a place in Crossroads where directors and others can readily find information on commonly-experienced issues such as the introductory and capstone courses, relationships with departments, and the supervision of internships.
