Minority Scholars Committee

Report from the Minority Scholars’ Committee 1999

The Minority Scholars’ Committee has been busy preparing for the annual meeting in Montreal. In addition to our sponsored panel, “Discourses of Affirmative Action/Civil Rights,“ we are looking forward to our meeting and to the joint gathering with the Women’s Committee. As it has been in the past, we believe it will be a fruitful venture. MSC members are also excited about the joint reception we are “hosting” with the Women’s Committee and the Sexual Minority Scholars (hip) Caucus and hope that it serves as a vehicle for creating networks that will foster interdisciplinary scholarship, and intellectual and personal growth for all those involved.

Among the items the MSC members will discuss at the annual meeting are our relationship with the Ethnic Studies Task Force, and strategies for making the ASA most effective for our constituency. We also want to begin to discuss making links with similar committees in other organizations such as the Organization of American Historians, the American Historical Association, and the Modern Language Association. It is our hope that dialogue with such groups (with overlapping membership in the ASA) would enhance our presence in the profession and our scholarship in the academy. Another topic for discussion will be how to “interface” with the Community Resource Fund, not only by encouraging programming in our respective communities but also by sustaining the fund through donations by participating in the ASA Speakers Bureau. We are eager to engage this new initiative to transform our words into action.

The MSC is looking forward to working with new members, Diane Glancy and Catherine Choy and feels fortunate to have Jonathan Holloway’s continued presence and expertise. As we prepare to discuss potential new members, its imperative that they know that attending and participating in the annual meeting is fundamental to the committee’s success. We will do our best to identify committed and hard working individuals and ask that the Executive Committee carefully choose future members.
