Okay, I’ll be the first. Since I’m new to this venue, and would like to participate, I am wondering what this forum believes to be the main issues affecting minority scholars? And are these different from issues in the past few years?

What a great question. I am certain that it will inspire many responses. Here is mine:
The first issue that comes to mind from my own personal experiences in academia is funding. There is simply not enough funding for traditionally marginalized students to pursue higher education. A recent study out of Texas A&M found that the primary factor in deterring students from pursuing a college educaiton was money or misguided ideas of what it would take to finance higher education.
The second issue I believe to be of great importance to higher education attainment for “minorty” students is support system. It is one thing to get as student into college-But then what. We need more systems in place to assist students in negotiating through academia; this is important not just for academic success but for personal fulfillment in the pursuit of higher education. Though many will dispute this and even more will argue the advancements in the arena, the fact is that discrimination still thrives in higher education. It is more covert than in the past and therefore more diffiult to recognize and challenge. Because of this the victim of discrimination will, more often than not, experience feeling of isolation within academia that could jeopardize acadmic success.
Wow! What a downer. Im sleepy now. I hope someone will take the reigns and add an optimistic spin on this. It’s there, I’m just so damn tired I can’t find it on my own. Sort of a case and point moment :)
Peace.
