K-16 Collaboration Committee

Report from the Secondary Education Committee 1997

ASA Convention Workshops at Kansas City and DC

The Committee put together five workshops for the Kansas City convention. The attendance was, on average, higher than last year, ranging from ten (10) to twenty-five (25), with some foreign teachers attending some of the workshops. Few local high school teachers attended, however. The special appeal the Committee made to academic members in the Program Book seems to have paid off, as there were more college and university members attending than in the past few years. Clearly, a local contact needs actively both to organize panels for secondary school teachers, and to send personal letters to school systems where s/he is known. Even then, it is difficult to recruit teachers to come to workshops in areas where local high schools provide few or no American Studies or integrated Humanities courses.

For the Washington, DC, conference, the Committee organized three local panels and is making presentations, and writing letters of invitation, to schoolteachers in the surrounding districts. The Committee has planned a full day of workshops, including a luncheon for teachers where President Mary Helen Washington will give a talk. This year, the Committee also had the first workshop, June Howard’s panel on a university-secondary school NEH collaboration, vetted through the regular Program Committee. The Committee hopes this signals that more college faculty will propose workshops that link the work of university faculty with that of secondary schools.

National Resource Guide of American Studies in the Secondary Schools

This summer Lois Rudnick finished editing the Guide, available at the Washington conference, and sent all 114 pages to the ASA for final editing and proofing. The seven model programs represent the excellent work happening in secondary schools that teach American Studies. Schools around the country continue to e-mail and call asking to be linked to already established programs, which allows Committee members to provide further help for schools in this area.

Commendation:

The Council commended Rudnick for her excellent guide. They agreed that the guide would be an effective tool to promote collegiality and professional interaction between university faculty and secondary educators.
