“Of Teachable Moments and Specters of Race”: Forum on Kevin Gaines’s 2009 ASA Keynote Address
A conversational response to Kevin Gaines’ 2009 ASA keynote address, “Of Teachable Moments and Specters of Race,” which highlighted the role that American Studies pedagogy can play in counteracting the damage that post-racial rhetoric has done to American social structures and that grassroots reform and partnerships can play in addressing racial inequities in public education.
Panelists Angela Davis, Kevin Gaines, Michael Meranze, and Michael O. Molina will reflect, among other topics, on the effects of the current economic crisis and racial moment on public education systems, interconnections between high stakes testing and the school-to-prison pipeline, grassroots approaches to educational reform, and new models for K-16 partnerships.
Special Note: We request that all attendees read Kevin Gaines’s 2009 ASA Presidential Address, which is available in the June, 2010 edition of the American Quarterly.

Inspired by Dolores Hayden’s The Power of Place, The Studio for Southern California History seeks to critically chronicle Southern California history “from the bottom up” to recover overlooked histories of community and strife in the larger Los Angeles area and to foster a sense of place and political entitlement among Southern Californians.
Participants in this panel, Sharon Sekhon, Director and Founder, and board members Catherine Gudis, José Alamillo, and Monica Pelayo have all developed scholarship in collaboration with the Studio for Southern California History and will talk of the role of the Studio in fostering a sense of place and of responsibility among scholars and teachers in Los Angeles with the hope of connect the work of the Studio with local history projects and organizations throughout the country.
