International Committee Report 2003

Annual Report of the International Committee 2003

The Council’s decision in favor of on-line balloting and the amendment to dedicate a Council seat for an international member, we believe, will both facilitate and increase the contributions of the international membership to the existing programs and activities of the American Studies Association. On-line balloting will undoubtedly yield a higher international membership turnout and subsequent involvement. An international Council member who would work in close collaboration with the international committee will be able to bring to the attention of the Council members personally, the issues pertaining to American Studies abroad and the problems the American Studies scholars are/will be encountering at a global level to which the Council is not wholly exposed by the mid- year and annual reports of the International Committee.

Definitely, the American Quarterly is a well-established scholarly publication, which is an extremely important resource to keep update with recent scholarship and books published, especially for the international membership. However, for some international scholars it may not be equally easy to compete with their colleagues in States to have their articles published in the Journal. In this respect any guidance to facilitate the publication of articles that live up to the set standards of the Journal, we believe, will encourage them to submit their work. In this respect a suggestion is to allow a distinguished well published international member to be on the Board of Managing or Board of Advisory editors. Similarly, assignment of a membership on the Crossroads Projects Advisory Board to an international member, we contend, will be mutually beneficial.

In line with creating collaboration, and international exchange among the graduate students and the faculty of Universities in USA and Turkey, initial steps are taken to establish linkage among Bilkent University in Turkey, University of California at Los Angeles, University of California at Riverside, and possibly University of California at Santa Barbara. The project is to be funded by CIES during the initial phase upon the acceptance of the proposal as part of the Fulbright Alumni Initiative Awards Program.

The 2004 Hartford Business meeting will be focused on the discussion of the scholarly requirements for tenure promotions in American Studies and Ethnic Studies and the future of American Studies in the respective countries of the International committee members and the feedback will be included in the following report.

Respectfully,
Dr. Gulriz Buken
Chair, International Committee
