Religion and American Culture Caucus, The ASA

The American Studies Association, exists to promote and encourage the study of American culture--past and present. Membership numbers approximately 5,000 and is open to all individuals and to cultural or educational institutions. Chartered in 1951, the American Studies Association now has more than 5,000 members. They come from many fields: history, literature, religion, art, philosophy, music, science, folklore, ethnic studies, anthropology, material culture, museum studies, sociology, government, communications, education, library science, gender studies, popular culture, and others. They include persons concerned with American culture: teachers and other professionals whose interests extend beyond their speciality, faculty and students associated with American Studies programs in colleges and secondary schools, museum directors and librarians interested in all segments of American life, public officials and administrators concerned with the broadest aspects of education. They approach American culture from many directions but have in common the desire to view America as a whole rather from the perspective of a single discipline.

Call for Commentors/Moderators

The Religion and American Culture Caucus was highly successful in increasing the number of panels on religion at the Annual Meeting of ASA in 2011, and we hope to repeat the experience in 2012. To that end, the Caucus has organized several panels for submission to the ASA program committee, but some of them are still in need of moderators/commentators. As a moderator/commentator, you would provide brief introductory comments for the panel, manage time, provide comments on each presentation as well as comments that unite the presentations, and manage Q and A. Moderators/commentators can appear on the ASA program only once, so please do not volunteer for this position if you already have a commitment to the ASA program.

Moderators/commentators are needed for panels on the following topics:
Animals and spirituality
American atheism
Catholicism, violence, and nationalism
Celebrity and religion
Liberation theology
Missionaries and empire
Religion and empire in the New World
Religion and Empire in Asia
Mormonism and race
Mormonism and violence
Presidential religion
Religion in early America
Slavery and abolition
Religion and tourism
Religion and war

If you can volunteer to moderate/comment upon one of these panels, please contact Rebecca Barrett-Fox promptly at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

}

//]]>
. As a reminder, panels cannot be submitted without moderators/commentators, so your generosity here might be the difference between a panel being submitted or not.

These are just some of the great topics that panelists are proposing. This year’s Annual Meeting promises to be a great one for scholars of religion. Thanks for your help in making that happen!

Ecumenica Special Issue
Politics, Performance, and Religion
Fall 2012
With the 2012 election just around the corner, and with religion playing such an important role in the public conversation on American politics, now is the ideal moment for a volume on this topic. Ecumenica will welcome submissions that explore the theme in any historical period and from any culture–not just the United States. The journal is particularly interested in scholarship that explores the relationship between religion/spirituality, culture, and theatre/performance studies. We will welcome any exploration of politics and culture that intersects with theatre and performativity. Ecumenica generally accepts submissions on a variety of topics and approaches to criticism, including theatrical performance and theatre history, dramatic literary criticism, social, political and cultural studies of theatre and performance, ethnographic explorations of performance traditions, and editorial commentaries on topics related to the performing arts.
Topics for this issue might include, but are not limited to:
Plays and performances that tackle religio-political subjects from a variety of perspectives, from activism and advocacy to satire.
Performative interactions between various faith traditions and national or international politics
Intersections or tensions between religious practice and policy or governance
Performance in or of Theocracies
Religious performativity in Secular/Pluralist public spaces
The performance of religious identity in politics, or political identity in religion
Performative political action–demonstrations, protests, parades, pageants, etc–that have a religious character
“Hot Button” issues of legislation
In addition to traditional scholarly articles, we publish interviews with individuals (actors, directors, teachers, playwrights, and others) who work at the intersections of theatre and religion/spirituality; profiles on individuals, organizations, and performances that fit within our field of inquiry; and, occasionally, excerpts from unpublished plays.

Ecumenica also seeks book and performance reviews broadly related to the issue topic. Deadline for submission is 15 November 2011. Inquiries and all material except reviews should be submitted in electronic format only to Carolyn Roark (cdr-at-ecumenicajournal.org). Book review inquiries and submissions may be sent to W. Barrett Huddleston (wbdh-at-ecumenicajournal.org), and performance review inquiries and submissions to Bradley W. Griffin (bwg-at-ecumenicajournal.org). The menus at left contain additional information, including submission guidelines, a style sheet, and the required cover page.

Over at the Religion in American History blog (http://usreligion.blogspot.com), Mike Altman (Emory) and I discuss the place of religion at this year’s ASA annual meeting. This year, there were 26 panels in the religion category, which was a great turn out.

Mike and I explore themes that connected panels including, science, the body, race, and the secular. We also make a good pitch about why more religious studies scholars should be attending ASA.

I am happy to announce that the winner of the RAAC Paper Prize for 2011 is Stephen Tuck, University of Oxford (UK) and fellow of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute, Harvard University (2011-2012), for his paper, entitled, “The Doubts of Their Fathers: The Secular Origins of the Civil Rights Movement.”

Our jury noted the originality of Stephen’s approach to including African Americans in discussions of secularism in the U.S. as well as “the quality of research, persuasive writing [and] judiciousness.” The members of our Caucus seconded this choice at our meeting on last Saturday. Congratulations to Stephen!

And many thanks to all the folks who submitted papers as well as our jury (John Corrigan, Tracy Fessenden, and Sylvester Johnson) who graciously read all the papers.

As an affiliate organization of the American Studies Association, the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading, and Publishing (SHARP) will sponsoring a panel submission to the 2011 American Studies Association program committee.

The American Studies Association annual meeting is in Baltimore, MD from 20-23 October 2011.

We are seeking paper proposals and a chair/commentator on the topic of AMERICAN RELIGIONS AND PRINT CULTURE. In accordance with the conference theme of “Imagination, Reparation, Transformation,” we want to explore the ways religious print cultures participate in the (re)creation of religious communities, foster social and political movements, frame cultural and moral debates, and change our individual and collective minds. We welcome submissions from many different disciplinary and religious perspectives and invite scholars to consider how religion intersects with race, gender, and sexuality; with capitalism and social class; with national and international economics and politics. Some questions might include: How do religious reading, writing, and publishing practices organize racial, political, class, gender, sexual and national identities? How do religious books / pamphlets / media shape historical and contemporary political and cultural debates? How do readers interact with “sacred” books, and how does this reading shape their personal, social, and political lives? How is religious reading by lay people encouraged, sanctioned, or disciplined by churches, synagogues, mosques, temples and other religious institutions? What role do religious books and pamphlets play in disseminating religious doctrine and motivating and organizing political action?
