Politics and Policy Caucus

In a space-clearing maneuver in the 1970s, American Studies abandoned its disciplinary interest in mainstream politics and policy in favor of providing much-needed academic attention to culture, theory, and marginalized voices. Recent shifts in the political climate and the recent Washington, D.C. conference theme, “Practices of Citizenship, Sustainability, and Belonging,” suggest renewed interest in politics and policy in the American studies community. As Ruth Wilson Gilmore has said, “policy is the new theory.”

This caucus is designed to support this (re)turn to the highly productive and rich cross-disciplinary overlapping of political science, histories of politics (and identity politics), public policy, and American studies. Through this caucus, we hope to encourage American studies scholars to examine the political and/or contemporary relevance of their work, as well as to encourage work in political science and public policy with the historical perspective and theoretical rigor of American studies.

Please submit panels for the Politics and Policy Caucus to sponsor. Potential topics may include: citizenship; youth and American politics; religion and politics; political economies and the politics of the economy (healthcare, stimulus, depression, socialism); presidential or mid-term elections; women in politics; conspiracy theories (Truthers and Birthers); and activism. The Politics and Policy Caucus is dedicated to interdisciplinarity and is interested in co-sponsoring panels with other organizations.
