In a space-clearing maneuver in the 1970s, American Studies abandoned its disciplinary interest in mainstream politics and policy in favor of providing a much-needed academic platform for marginalized voices. Recent shifts in the political climate (most notably the election of Barak Obama), last year’s theme “Practices of Citizenship, Sustainability, and Belonging,” and the conference’s location in Washington, D.C. suggest renewed interest in politics and policy in the American studies community.
This caucus is designed to support this (re)turn to the highly productive and rich cross-disciplinary overlapping of political science, histories of politics (and identity politics), public policy, and American studies. Through this caucus, we hope to encourage American studies scholars to examine the political and/or contemporary relevance of their work, as well as to encourage work in political science and public policy with the historical perspective and theoretical rigor of American studies.
