Performance of the Americas Caucus

The informal Performance Caucus and Music of the Americas Caucus merged at the 2002 annual convention to create the Performance of the Americas Caucus within the American Studies Association. The aim of the caucus is to provide a network for scholars working on performance from diverse disciplinary locations-not only from American Studies but also from musicology, dance studies, theatre and performance studies, historical and literary studies, sociology and anthropology, art history and visual culture. Hence the caucus defines performance in the broadest possible terms-as cultural events bounded in time and framed in space. Whether verbal, nonverbal, visual, aural, kinaesthetic, or mixed-media. Whether in the marketplace, the disco, or the proscenium theatre. Whether in North or South America.

The Performance of the Americas Caucus hosts a reception and business meeting at each year’s annual convention of the American Studies Association. The caucus also sponsors panels based on the annual conference theme. Individual members also forward their own papers and panels, many of which include performance and fulfill the ASA call for alternate formats. In addition, the caucus advocates for the inclusion of performance artists at all annual conferences.

Currently the Performance of the Americas Caucus is formalizing its policies and practices. To date volunteers have organized the caucus. To volunteer your assistance or to receive the email announcements for the caucus, please send your name, affiliation, research interests, and email address to Jill Lane, Assistant Professor, American Studies Program, PO Box 208326, New Haven, CT 06520-8236 or   jill.lane@nyu.edu.
