Annual Meeting: General Information

Travel Grants for International Scholars (Contingent on Funding)

The ASA is pleased to announce a travel grants program (Contingent on Funding) to support the participation of international scholars who will appear on the Association’s 2008 annual meeting program,.

The ASA Executive Committee has asked that the International Scholars Travel Grants program be administered by the 2008 Program Committee, with Emory Elliott serving ex officio, along with Kate Delaney, serving as the Travel Grants Coordinator.

The Program Committee now invites applications, on the appended electronic form, for travel grants to help international scholars attend the 2008 annual meeting. Categories of people eligible to apply for aid include American Studies scholars based outside the U.S. who are presenting papers on the program, or chairing/commenting on a session.

Priorities will be given to scholars who do not have adequate support to attend the conference from their home institutions and other sources. The ASA has received a two-year Luce Foundation grant to organize visits by scholars from East and Southeast Asia. We are also particularly interested in supporting individual scholars who fit the above criteria from regions that are underrepresented at the ASA, including South Asia, the Middle East, South America, and Africa.

The Committee anticipates awarding between 15 and 25 grants, ranging from $400 to $2,000, or even higher for a small number of deserving applicants with no other sources of support, especially from underrepresented parts of the world. Generally speaking, we will favor relatively more substantial awards, understanding that too-small token awards do not necessarily make the trip possible given limited funding sources at home and the substantial costs involved for airfare, hotel, registration, and incidentals.

That said, it is in everyone’s interest that meaningful funding reach as many individuals as possible in order to broaden the reach and depth of international participation in the ASA meeting. And since our grant will rarely be sufficient to cover the full cost of travel and registration, applicants are perhaps best advised, where possible, to request support for a designated component of the cost, which if received can often help leverage support for the other components from home institutions and other sources. To this end, we encourage applicants to provide a clear estimation of their needs and how ASA support could combine with other potential sources of funding. To help applicants develop strategies for securing needed support, a chart for estimating expenses is included on the application form.

Please respond as promptly as possible, and note the July 1, 2008 deadline for applications, as we hope to make awards early enough to facilitate individuals’ completion of travel arrangements well in advance of the October meeting.
